Kishu Shimpaku Juniper (Juniperus chinensis 'Kishu') is a highly regarded juniper variety in bonsai, prized for its deep green, substantial scale-like foliage, densely packed leaf clusters, and a steady, powerful branch structure. Its bark gradually develops an aged, weathered character over time, while its branches remain flexible and highly workable.

Compared to Itoigawa Juniper, Kishu Juniper has thicker, rounder foliage that forms almost cushion-like, three-dimensional clusters, with a deeper, richer green tone. Itoigawa, by contrast, is known for its shorter, finer, and brighter-toned scale leaves, giving it a lighter and softer overall texture.

Kishu Juniper is vigorous and adapts well to Hong Kong’s hot, humid outdoor climate. It thrives in sunny, well-ventilated locations such as balconies, terraces, or rooftops. Its foliage tolerates pruning well; with regular pinching and maintenance, it can gradually develop a compact, layered canopy.

The Contrast of Deadwood In juniper bonsai, the visual language of endurance is expressed through the interplay of life and decay:

  • Shari (舍利干): Partially bleached trunk sections that mimic the effects of natural weathering, revealing a whitened surface that speaks of time and resilience.
  • Jin (神枝): Slender, white skeletal branch tips that contrast sharply against vibrant green foliage, enhancing the dramatic tension of the composition.

Juniper's dense foliage is ideally suited to these techniques, allowing the "dead" white wood and "living" green canopy to coexist in a cycle of natural continuity. A classic representative of its genus, the Itoigawa Shimpaku is a living art form that evolves alongside its keeper.

Size Width 60cm × Height 85cm (pot included)
Placement Place in a bright, sunny, and well‑ventilated area outdoors, on a balcony, or near a window.
Watering Water thoroughly when the akadama surface turns light brown, ensuring free drainage from the bottom holes and avoiding waterlogging. In hot weather, mist the foliage and surrounding area in the early morning or after sunset to cool and humidify the plant.

Return policy
  • All bonsai plants are living, naturally evolving works of art, so their appearance may vary slightly from photos due to growth, pruning, and seasonal changes. For this reason, we do not accept returns or refunds based on minor differences in shape or form.
  • Pots may show natural texture, glaze variation, or light marks from use—these are normal characteristics, not defects.
  • We carefully check each plant’s condition before shipping and pack it securely to reduce the risk of damage in transit. Delivery is arranged and managed by us. If your plant or pot arrives significantly damaged due to shipping, please contact us with photos and we will review your case and, where appropriate, offer a return or refund.
