About Bonsai
Any Bonsai recommendations for beginners?
Choosing a species to start with can be tough, I always recommend beginning with a medium size Bonsai tree older than 5 years old. In my experience, younger Bonsai trees tend to be more delicate and require extra care when adapting to different environmental conditions. For beginners, popular outdoor Bonsai options include Juniper and Pine, while Ficus, Carmona, and Chinese Elm are recommended for indoor Bonsai.
Where should I put my Bonsai?
Most Bonsai trees thrive in environments with abundant sunlight and good ventilation. They come from various tropical, subtropical and temperate regions, each with its own unique preferences. Common Bonsai trees like pine and cypress, for instance, require plenty of sunlight, making them suitable for outdoor setting. Why is my plant wired?
The reason your tree is wired is to shape and train it into the desired aesthetic form. It is a common technique used in Bonsai cultivation to create the intricate and artistic shapes that these trees are known for, by gently bending and guiding the branches with the help of wires.
Can I remove the wire?
Certainly but the wire should not be removed too early, as it may result in the branches springing back to their original position. The duration of wire training varies depending on the Bonsai species and could take several months to several years. It is recommended to wait until the branches have set in their desired shape before removing the wire. When removing the wire, it is crucial to do so gently and carefully to avoid damaging the branches or bark.
What is the function of the basket inside the pot?
The basket holds "Tamahi," an organic slow-releasing fertilizer. It is made of rapeseed and bone meal and remains effective for around 2 to 3 months.
How do I know if the soil is dry?
Most of our Bonsai are planted in a potting mix of partly akadama soil, which appears darker when wet. Therefore, if the akadama soil appears pale in colour, it indicates that watering is needed.
